Walter Sandosam graduated from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, England where he read Management Sciences, majoring in finance. He also holds a Master of Management from Open University Malaysia. He is currently Senior Fellow at a leading private university and has his own consulting and advisory firm.

Prior to joining academia, his career had spanned over 30 years working with the largest financial services group in the country covering the spectrum of banking activities with specialisation in enterprise risk management, governance, compliance and internal audit. He was responsible for expanding the bank’s international network, especially in the Asean region. His last appointment was as Executive Vice President of Internal Audit.

He has obtained the postgraduate professional certifications of Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA) and Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) awarded by the Institute of Internal Auditors Inc. USA. As a certified Quality Assurance Reviewer (QAR), he is recognised as competent globally to conduct quality assurance reviews for internal audit functions.

Walter has served as the President of the Institute of Internal Auditors Malaysia (IIAM) and committee member of the Asian Confederation of Institutes of Internal Auditors. At the international level, he is a member of the Academic Relations Committee of IIA Inc. USA which monitors academic programs in risk management and audit. IIAM has conferred Fellowship status on him for his services to the audit profession.

Walter is a Board Member of the Audit and Assurance Standards Board (AASB) of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and serves on the Operation Review Panel of the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission. He is a member of the accreditation panel of the Finance Accreditation Agency (supported by Central Bank/Securities Commission).

He has delivered papers at both local and international conferences and conducted training programs with the regulators at Senior Management and Board levels with specific focus on risk management, internal control frameworks and corporate governance. Walter is a Human Resource Development Fund (HRDF) Certified Trainer. His current interests are in strategy, risk, audit, ethics, innovation and transformation. He also conducts training for the Institute of Bankers Malaysia in banking operations.
